What is sexual assault?
- Any unwanted sexual act committed or attempted against a person’s will.
- Sexual contact forced or coerced by friends, dates, spouses, family members, acquaintances or strangers.
- Any forced or coerced oral or anal sex.
Some common reactions to sexual assault:

Fear | Embarrassment | Depression | Loss of Identity | Guilt | Betrayal | Helplessness | Victimization | Anger | Loss of Trust | Anxiety | Confusion | Shame | Powerlessness | Sleeplessness | Loss of Appetite | Depression | Isolation | Flashbacks | Emotional Shock
Sexual assault happens when someone is forced into sexual contact against his or her will. Sexual assault is never the victim’s fault. The chances of being a victim of sexual assault in your lifetime are 1 in 3 for females and 1 in 6 for males. More than 80% of sexual assaults are committed by someone the victim knows, an acquaintance, relative or friend.
