Sexual Assault Forensic Exam

El Dorado County Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) is a multidisciplinary group of local professionals that includes Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners , The Center Advocates, Law Enforcement and the district attorney’s Office, who work together to care for adult and child survivors of sexual assault and child abuse and hold the offender accountable in the criminal justice system.

SART (Sexual Assault Response Team) Each person from the SART has a different role:

The Law Enforcement Officer is there to help solve the crime and enforce the laws.

The Hospital Nurse Examiner is there to gather evidence and ensure any health issues are addressed.

The Center Advocate/Sexual Assault Counselor is there to provide you with support through your healing from this sexual assault and during all of the legal process. The counselor is required by law to keep confidential everything you tell her privately. This means she can’t talk to anyone outside The Center (your friends, family, law enforcement, district attorney, etc.) about what you’ve said, your case, or anything related to the sexual assault unless you want her to and you sign a written agreement. The Center is not a county agency, and is not a part of law enforcement or Marshall Hospital.

You will probably come in contact with other agencies, such as Victim Witness and the District Attorney’s Office later on. All of these agencies have different goals and different laws regarding confidentiality. Although we have different responsibilities as a part of our SART, we all work together as a team.
