Criminal Justice Advocacy
A Message from Debbie Appel our Criminal Justice Advocate:
“As a criminal justice advocate my role is to accompany our clients to criminal court during prelims or jury trial when they have to testify. I will follow the case for them and keep them informed about when the next court date is, and what happened at court. I also help our clients with victim impact statements. I’m a good resource for our clients on the criminal process and I will help with communication with the district attorney office. I can request a CRO (Criminal Restraining Order) if the clients wants one, from the DA’s office. Most importantly I provide emotional support!”
The role of a Criminal Justice Advocate:
1) Explain the process (no charges, filed charges, what the charges are, plea bargaining, trial).
2) Provide support and keep the client informed.
3) Coordinate with the deputy district attorney and victim witness.
4) Explain basic legal terminology
5) Describe styles of various prosecutors
6) Victim impact statement
