Building Relationships, Families & Communities Free from Violence

Dear Emma ,

Last night while driving home after meeting with The Center's Survivors Advisory Committee I was reminded of a quote from Helen Keller who once said, "The world is full of suffering; It is also full of the overcoming of it.", and I reflected how empowering it is to sit with and listen to our survivors as they share the ups and downs of their journey.  It is equally amazing to experience the emotional rollercoaster ride we take. One moment we are shedding tears together and the next laughing till we cry.  It is truly an honor to meet with them every month.  Then my mind drifted to another survivor, a humble hero of mine, Pat Baron.

Pat is the founder of Kacie's Ride for Hope, a motorcycle ride and fundraising event to honor his sister, Kacie who was murdered by an ex boyfriend.  Pat made a choice to channel his grief in a positive direction and turn a tragedy into triumph and not only raise money for The Center, but to provide important prevention education to a whole new community.  In addition to his fundraising/education efforts, Pat also completed the 70 hours of volunteer training and is a powerful speaker and advocate presenting to a wide range of audiences.  This year, in the morning of September 11th over 500 bikers will start their engines on Placerville's historic Main Street and carry Kacie's spirit, along with hundreds of American flags, as they ride through the Sierra Foothills.  It is my hope that each of you will join with me in supporting Pat.  Check out the article in this newsletter for all the ways you can contribute to this amazing event.  At the very least, it is worth getting up early to join us on Main Street and feel the power as 500+ bikers rev their engines and take off on their ride of hope!  You don't want to miss this!!

I am also excited to announce The Center's new website is live.  It has been a goal of the agency to redesign its website and thanks to the efforts of Emma our project manager, our staff content writers and our friends at 3fold Communications, the goal has been accomplished.  Be sure to visit the new site and while you're at it friend The Center on Facebook.
Once again, from all of us at The Center, thank you for your generous support.  See you on September 11th.

Peace,

Matt Huckabay

The Center's Has Updated Its Website!

website

Over the years The Center has had a few different website layouts, but we hadn't found a layout that allowed for great depth. Our new website designed by 3 Fold Communication is easy to use, has many different layers, and hopefully will give support to our clients and our community partners. We hope that this new website will allow The Center to have a centralized place for all the information that people outside The Center might need.

A really great feature of the new website is the Get Info section.  You can access this section from the top navigation bar. The Get info Section has summaries of all the different areas of intimate partner violence and family violence that The Center deals with. Not only is there information, but there are tools for survivors, friends and family of survivors, and what you can do to help.

Another great feature of the new website is the What We Do section. This sections breaks down exactly what we do within education, advocacy, and services. Below you can see the description of our safe house.

We at The Center are really excited for the launch of this new website. Please take a look and explore the site. If you have any questions contact Emma Owens at (530)626-1450 or emmao@thecenternow.org

FaceBook
Become a fan of The Center for Violence-Free Relationships on Facebook. The Center has created a Facebook page with information on upcoming events and updates of what we are doing.

It is important that we add as many fans as possible, so that if we have something that comes up that needs collective action we can reach as many of our allies as possible. For example, if our state funding gets line item vetoed this year we can announce on Facebook that we need people to make phone calls to get our funding reinstated. Just to let you know, the funding is in the budget and we are hopeful that it will remain in the budget.

Facebook is also a way that you can hear about what we do at The Center on a regular basis. We have already posted information about upcoming events and some photo highlights of past events. We hope to see you on Facebook and please invite your friends to become fans as well. Click here to go to our Facebook page.

A Message from Pam Granick

Pam Granick

"My name is Pamela Granick, and I'm delighted to have the opportunity to join the team at The Center as its newest counselor and co-facilitator.

My initial affiliation with The Center began in 2009 as a volunteer, while I was completing my internship towards a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, Family Studies from Corban University.  Although I was employed as a Youth Behavioral Specialist and group facilitator with New Morning Youth and Family Services at the time, my program requirements did not permit me to intern with my employer.  As I considered the different human services agencies in the Placerville area that offered internship opportunities, I discovered The Center was the logical choice for me.  After all, the original impetus for me to return to school to become trained as a counselor was rooted in my experiences in supporting a friend through a difficult, abusive and frightening long-term relationship to a place of health and safety.  It was through that process that I had come to understand how unresolved issues with abusive relationships and past sexual assault can underlie depression, anger, social functioning and image problems, and how easily the core issues can be missed by friends, family members, faith community representatives and even mental health professionals who have not been trained to detect the signs of interpersonal violence.
The Center's rich and extensive training program was the perfect counterpoint to my formal training, and I was blessed to be allowed to work with both sides of the "power and control" equation:  empowering victims as a crisis counselor, and assisting aggressors in developing new communication skills as a co-facilitator for the CAP and MAAP programs.

When my internship was completed, I was asked to continue in these capacities as a staff member, and I am excited and enthusiastic about the prospect of assisting clients to move beyond their previous scripts as victims and perpetrators to discover their exceptional strengths and inner resources, on the way to fulfilling their unique purposes in life."
