The Center for Violence-Free Relationships
Love should feel safe.
Recognizing the difference between healthy, unhealthy, and abusive relationships.
Healthy
Respect and shared choices
- You can disagree without fear.
- Boundaries and consent are respected.
- Both people have a say.
- Honesty and trust go both ways.
- Friendships and independence are supported.
- Money decisions are discussed openly.
Unhealthy
Patterns that need attention
- Concerns are brushed aside.
- Conversations turn into blame.
- Jealousy creates tension.
- Dishonesty damages trust.
- Decisions feel one-sided.
- Conflict goes unresolved.
Abusive
Power, control, and fear
- Threats or intimidation
- Isolation from friends or family
- Control over money, work, or movement
- Monitoring devices or location
- Sexual pressure or coercion
- Physical harm or threats of harm
Abuse does not have to be physical.
You do not need to label your experience to ask for help.
These examples are a starting point, not a checklist. Behaviors can overlap, and positive moments do not cancel out abuse. You deserve support even if your experience is not listed here.
You deserve support. We are here to listen.
